🔼 Sweeping Season. Maryland softball took all three games against Illinois on its home field this weekend, sweeping a Big Ten opponent on the road for the first time since joining the conference. Here’s how it happened:
A five-run fourth inning was all the firepower the Terps needed in game one, as Courtney Wyche shut down the Illini lineup in her 10th complete game of the season. Mackense Greico highlighted that big fourth inning with a two-run home run.
Trinity Schlotterbeck dominated on both sides of the ball as the Terps continued to make their NCAA Tournament case with a dominant win. Schlotterbeck collected a career-high four hits at the plate, and threw a complete game in the circle. Greico also connected on another home run in the game.
Schlotterbeck again was right in the thick of things, blasting a solo home run in the second inning to get the Terps on the board. Sammi Woods and Megan Mikami added RBI of their own in the inning, and the Terps sailed to a sweep.
🔼 Streak Lives On. The Dirty Terps have now won 21 consecutive Big Ten series, taking the rubber match against Nebraska on Sunday to clinch the win.
A crooked five-spot on the scoreboard in the fifth inning was the damage the Terps needed against the Huskers. The inning started with a game-tying RBI from Luke Shliger, and Nick Lorusso busted the game open with a double that eventually scored three runs thanks to a Nebraska error.
Eight home runs in the first five innings is the best way to briefly describe the Saturday slugfest between these two teams. Matt Shaw contributed two home runs to the cause, while Lorusso and Kevin Keister joined in on the fun as well.
Although there were many contributors in Maryland’s 20-run effort, the day belonged to Lorusso. The senior tied Shaw’s single-game RBI record with eight driven in, and in doing so, set the single-season Maryland record with his 84th RBI.
🔼 Just Short. Maryland men’s lacrosse’s run in the Big Ten Tournament came to an end Saturday at the hands of Michigan, with the Wolverines winning the title game over the Terps 14-5.
Eric Spanos delivered the second hat trick of his career against the Wolverines, and Braden Erksa, who was named to the all-tournament team, scored the other two.
🔼 Back And Forth. The Terps women’s lacrosse squad gave No. 1 Northwestern all it could handle in the Big Ten Tournament championship game, taking a lead four separate times, but ultimately fell to the Wildcats 14-9.
Hannah Leubecker led the way with her sixth hat trick of the year, while Shaylan Ahearn, Abby Bosco, Libby May and Chrissy Thomas were all selected for the all-tournament team.
