🐢 And much, much more!
📈 STOCK UP
🔼 Top Of His Class. University of Maryland junior shortstop Matt Shaw became the highest draft pick in program history after being selected No. 13 overall by the Chicago Cubs last night.
With the selection, Matt Shaw passes John Hetrick who was taken with the No. 17 pick by the Detroit Tigers in 1967. Shaw becomes the sixth first-round draft pick in program history and the first since Brett Cecil in 2007.
🔼 Tell Your Story. In the brave new world of college athletics, opportunities for student-athletes to earn money from their name, image and likeness have been the talk of the NCAA since the summer of 2021. For Margot Lawn, a fifth-year field hockey forward for Maryland, the introduction of a revolutionary NIL policy presented a golden opportunity to live out her dreams of playing collegiate field hockey while partnering with brands that represent her values.
🔼 He Was An All-American. Incoming Maryland baseball student-athlete Joey McMannis was named a third team national High School All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association. The 2023 Gatorade Maryland Baseball Player of the Year earns the honor after a stellar campaign which saw him lead Catoctin High School and Frederick County in numerous statistics both on the mound and at the plate.
He finished top-two in the county in every major statistical category, including hitting .500 with nine home runs and 34 RBIs. A two-way star, he also averaged 13.5 strikeouts per game while earning a 7-1 overall record and an impressive 0.51 ERA. The No. 8 overall recruit in the state of Maryland according to Perfect Game comes to the Terps as one of the top players in the state.
🔼 Return To Sender. We’re just 54 days away from Terps football kicking off their season against Towson. What better time to highlight Octavian Smith Jr. and his 54-yard kickoff return against Indiana to set up a go-ahead touchdown and help Maryland win in Bloomington?
🤔 TERPS TRIVIA
Speaking of All-Americans. With Matt Shaw earning consensus first-team All-American honors, it’s the first time in program history that Maryland baseball has gone back-to-back years with such a player.
